Description

The Swanky Club, located at 920 North Boulder Highway in the Henderson area of the Las Vegas Valley, was one of the most memorable restaurant-nightclub venues in Southern Nevada’s mid-century history. Long before the site became associated with later gaming operations, the Swanky Club built its reputation on food, cocktails, nightlife, and entertainment, serving as a social anchor for the growing working-class communities of the burgeoning Las Vegas Valley. The property’s roots date to 1942, and by 1946 it had become the Swanky Club, operating in a period when Henderson was still emerging from its wartime industrial beginnings. Rather than catering to Strip tourists, the Swanky served locals — plant workers, tradesmen, families, and regulars looking for a place to eat, drink, and spend an evening out close to home. What made the Swanky Club especially famous was its smorgasbord. Historical sources credit it with offering the first buffet service in Clark County, making it a culinary landmark as well as a nightlife destination. For many Southern Nevadans, the Swanky’s name became almost synonymous with the smorgasbord itself. It was the kind of place where diners came hungry and left remembering both the meal and the atmosphere. The club also carved out a unique place in entertainment history. Vintage Las Vegas notes that the Swanky featured Clark County’s first nightly female impersonators, an unusually bold and memorable booking choice for the time. That detail alone places the venue in a more colorful and pioneering category than the average roadside supper club. The original Swanky Club building was destroyed by fire in 1958, but the business did not disappear. A new structure was built in 1959, allowing the venue to continue serving patrons for decades more. It remained a recognized local institution until its closure in 1984 and was demolished in 1990. Today, the Swanky Club is remembered not as a casino first, but as a beloved restaurant and nightclub — a Boulder Highway original where buffet dining, cocktails, and live entertainment came together in one of old Henderson’s most storied venues. The property is now home to Cadence Crossing Casino.
