Description

Santa Anita Race Book was an early and influential wagering venue on the Las Vegas Strip, helping establish horse race betting as a major part of Southern Nevada gaming culture from 1954 through 1985. Located on the growing Las Vegas Strip during a formative era of resort expansion, the race book brought the excitement of California thoroughbred racing directly into the heart of Las Vegas entertainment. Named after Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, the venue capitalized on the enormous popularity of West Coast horse racing. At the time, Santa Anita Park was one of the premier racing destinations in the United States, associated with glamour, prestige, and high-stakes betting. By adopting the Santa Anita name, the race book immediately connected itself to that reputation and attracted both seasoned handicappers and casual bettors visiting Las Vegas. During the 1950s, race books were becoming an increasingly important part of the city’s gaming landscape. While casinos centered heavily on blackjack, craps, roulette, and slot machines, horse racing attracted a different clientele—bettors interested in odds, statistics, and strategy. Santa Anita Race Book catered directly to that audience, offering a focused environment where patrons could study racing forms, monitor odds boards, and place wagers on major races happening hundreds of miles away. The atmosphere inside the race book was energetic yet concentrated, distinct from the louder casino floors nearby. Guests gathered around ticker boards and announcers’ updates, discussing horses, jockeys, and betting strategies while waiting for post times and race results. For many visitors, the race book became part of a daily ritual during their Las Vegas stay. Santa Anita Race Book also represented a broader evolution within Las Vegas gaming. It demonstrated how wagering could extend beyond traditional casino games and become a specialized entertainment experience in its own right. This helped pave the way for the sophisticated race and sportsbook operations that would later become a defining feature of major Las Vegas resorts. Today the property is a part of the Encore Hotel and Casino complex.
