The Landmark was a hotel and casino in Winchester, Nevada, near the Las Vegas Strip. Frank Caroll, the original owner, bought the property in 1961. Construction of the Landmark tower began in September 1961, and Caroll opened the Landmark shopping center and apartments by the end of that year. The tower was about 80% complete by 1962, but funding issues halted construction. In 1966, funding from the Central Teamsters Pension Fund allowed for the project’s completion. At that time, ownership changed to a group that included Caroll. Delays continued, however, leading Caroll to withdraw his gaming license request in 1968, and the resort was then put up for sale. Howard Hughes bought the Landmark in 1969 for $17.3 million, investing in improvements before opening it with 400 slot machines and 503 hotel rooms. The Landmark gained fame for hosting country music performances and celebrities but struggled financially. It filed for bankruptcy in 1985 and closed in 1990, unable to compete with larger resorts. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority bought the Landmark in 1993, demolished it in 1995, and started an expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center on the site, which opened in 2021.
