Venue History

Lady Luck Hotel and Casino was a familiar downtown Las Vegas fixture for nearly four decades, known for its approachable atmosphere, steady local following, and long evolution from a modest gambling hall into a full hotel-casino. Located at 206 North 3rd Street, just off Fremont Street, the property adopted the Lady Luck name in 1968 under owner Andy Tompkins, marking the true beginning of its run as one of downtown’s enduring gaming landmarks. Unlike the grander resort properties on the Strip, Lady Luck built its reputation on accessibility and familiarity. It catered to value-minded visitors and locals who wanted classic downtown gaming without excessive flash. Over time, the casino expanded well beyond its small beginnings. It grew in 1972, was updated again in 1979, added a small hotel in 1983, and eventually gained two hotel towers in 1986 and 1989, transforming it into a much larger downtown presence. By the late 1980s, the property had 743 rooms. Lady Luck became part of a changing downtown Las Vegas landscape as Fremont Street evolved from the city’s original gaming center into a destination competing with the ever-expanding Strip. Through those shifts, the property remained recognizable for its straightforward appeal and dependable casino identity. During the 1990s, the Lady Luck name also expanded beyond Las Vegas through Lady Luck Gaming, further raising the profile of the downtown property and its brand. Its long run eventually came to an end in 2006, when the casino closed after years of declining performance. The shuttered property sat dormant until it was acquired, renovated, and ultimately reborn as the Downtown Grand, which opened on October 27, 2013. Lady Luck is remembered as a classic downtown casino of the old school—less about spectacle, more about consistency, convenience, and the everyday charm that defined much of vintage Fremont Street. Its legacy lives on as part of the broader story of downtown Las Vegas and its constant reinvention. In October 2011, it was renamed Downtown Grand, and after a $100 million renovation, opened on October 27, 2013.
