Venue History
Folies Bergère at the Tropicana Las Vegas was one of the most legendary and influential production shows in Las Vegas history, helping define the glamour, spectacle, and sophistication of the classic Strip showroom era for nearly five decades. Opening on December 24, 1959, the lavish revue brought the spirit of Parisian cabaret to Las Vegas and quickly became the Tropicana’s signature attraction. Inspired by the famed Folies Bergère in France, the Las Vegas production blended topless showgirls, elaborate costumes, grand stage productions, comedy, music, and specialty acts into a distinctly European-style theatrical experience. At a time when Las Vegas was rapidly emerging as an international entertainment destination, Folies Bergère elevated the standard for showroom productions on the Strip. The show became famous for its extravagant visual presentation. Towering feathered headdresses, rhinestone-covered costumes, ornate scenery, and precision choreography created a spectacle unlike anything else in Las Vegas during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The iconic “Folies showgirls” became symbolic of classic Las Vegas glamour and helped establish the city’s worldwide entertainment image. Over the decades, the production continuously evolved through multiple editions and revisions. One of the most notable incarnations was “Folies Bergère 75,” a major mid-1970s update that refreshed the long-running show for a new era of Las Vegas entertainment. Debuting in 1975, Folies Bergère ’75 modernized the revue with updated choreography, contemporary musical arrangements, larger production numbers, and new costume designs while still preserving the elegance and Parisian style that audiences associated with the Folies name. The production reflected how Las Vegas showroom entertainment was adapting during the 1970s as audiences increasingly expected faster pacing, larger spectacles, and more modern staging techniques. Throughout its history, Folies Bergère also featured comedians, acrobats, singers, and specialty performers alongside the dance productions, creating a fast-moving and highly varied entertainment experience. Its longevity helped cement the Tropicana’s identity as one of the Strip’s premier entertainment destinations. After an extraordinary run lasting nearly 50 years, Folies Bergère closed on March 28, 2009. Today, it remains one of the most celebrated productions in Las Vegas history—a defining symbol of the classic showroom era and the enduring glamour of vintage Vegas entertainment.
