Description

The Eldorado Casino in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson is one of the city’s longest-operating gaming establishments and a cornerstone of the historic Water Street district. Located at 140 South Water Street, the Eldorado traces its origins to 1961, when it opened as the Wheel Casino, serving a growing population in Henderson during the postwar expansion of Southern Nevada. In 1962, the property was acquired and rebranded as the Eldorado Casino, marking the beginning of a new chapter that would define the venue for decades. The name “Eldorado,” evoking the legendary city of gold, aligned with the aspirational branding common in Nevada gaming, while also giving the property a distinctive identity in Henderson’s modest but competitive casino market. Unlike the massive resorts of the Las Vegas Strip, the Eldorado Casino developed as a locals-oriented gaming hall, catering primarily to Henderson residents rather than tourists. Its location on Water Street placed it at the heart of the city’s early commercial activity, making it a natural gathering place for workers, families, and longtime locals. Inside, the Eldorado offered a traditional casino experience scaled to its community-focused setting. Over the years, it featured slot machines, video poker, table games, a sportsbook, and dining options, along with a lounge that provided live entertainment. The atmosphere was informal and familiar, with many patrons returning regularly for its approachable gaming limits and friendly service. Through the 1960s and well into the 2000s, as Henderson continued to grow, the Eldorado remained a steady presence amid changing trends in the gaming industry. While newer, larger casinos emerged along Boulder Highway and beyond, the Eldorado retained its identity as a neighborhood casino rooted in local tradition. The Eldorado Casino close permanently in 2021, but defined an era as one of Henderson’s longest surviving venues. Its longevity reflects both adaptability and community loyalty, maintaining its place on Water Street as the surrounding area evolved. More than just a casino, the Eldorado represented a living piece of Henderson history — a venue that witnessed the city’s transformation from a small industrial town into a thriving part of the Las Vegas Valley. Today the property is home to the Pass Casino.
