Dee’s Hamburgers was one of the most recognizable fast-food landmarks in Las Vegas during the 1970s, bringing the familiar taste and colorful roadside branding of a beloved Utah chain to Southern Nevada. Operated as part of the Salt Lake City–based Dee’s Drive-In franchise, the restaurant became a favorite stop for locals, tourists, and Strip employees looking for a quick, affordable meal in an era before national burger chains dominated the Las Vegas landscape. Las Vegas was home to two Dee’s Hamburgers locations. The best-known stood at 2106 South Las Vegas Boulevard, at the corner of Boston Avenue, just south of the Sahara and near the entrance of today’s STRAT. The second location operated on Maryland Parkway near Sahara Avenue, extending the chain’s reach beyond the Strip. Both restaurants operated during the late 1960s and 1970s, with the Strip location generally documented from approximately 1969 to 1978. Like its Utah counterparts, Dee’s embraced the classic American drive-in tradition. Guests could order hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, soft drinks, and other fast-food favorites served quickly in a casual setting. The restaurants appealed to families, students, casino employees, and travelers alike, offering dependable food at reasonable prices during a period when Las Vegas still featured a healthy mix of independent eateries and regional chains. Perhaps nothing defined Dee’s more than its unforgettable roadside signage. Towering above the restaurant was the chain’s famous rocking clown sign, designed by Salt Lake City-based YESCO. The cheerful clown held balloons advertising menu favorites and gently rocked back and forth to attract passing motorists. It became one of the most memorable pieces of roadside advertising in Las Vegas and remains a favorite subject among collectors of vintage Vegas photography and signage. Although Dee’s never achieved the celebrity status of the Strip’s famous casino coffee shops or gourmet restaurants, it represented an important part of everyday Las Vegas life. It was the kind of place where families grabbed dinner after a day in town, casino workers stopped after a late shift, and road-trippers found a familiar meal before continuing their journey. Dee’s Hamburgers is remembered as a nostalgic piece of vintage Las Vegas, a regional fast-food icon whose colorful clown, simple menu, and roadside charm captured the character of a more relaxed era on the Strip.
