Wet ‘n Wild Water Park was one of the most memorable non-gaming attractions ever built on the Las Vegas Strip, offering locals and tourists a place to escape the desert heat for nearly two decades. Opened on May 18, 1985, the park occupied a 27-acre parcel on Las Vegas Boulevard next to the Sahara, on property that had once served as home to El Rancho Vegas and was later owned by Howard Hughes. The park was developed through a collaboration between George Millay’s Wet ‘n Wild organization and Howard Hughes Properties. Its arrival reflected a major shift in Las Vegas during the 1980s, when the city was broadening its appeal beyond gambling, showrooms, and casino resorts. Wet ‘n Wild gave the Strip something different: a full-scale family-friendly water park located directly in the heart of the resort corridor. For Las Vegas residents, Wet ‘n Wild quickly became a summer tradition. With triple-digit temperatures common for much of the year, the park offered slides, wave pools, lazy-river-style attractions, splash areas, and shaded spaces where families, teenagers, tourists, and hotel workers could cool off. Its location near major resorts made it especially unusual. Instead of being tucked away in the suburbs, Wet ‘n Wild brought swimsuits, rafts, and water slides directly to one of the most famous streets in the world. The park’s presence also captured a particular era of Las Vegas history. During the 1980s and 1990s, the city experimented heavily with attractions designed to reach broader audiences, including families and budget-conscious visitors. Wet ‘n Wild fit that moment perfectly, becoming a beloved local landmark while adding variety to the Strip’s entertainment mix. Despite its popularity, the park eventually fell victim to land value and redevelopment pressures. Wet ‘n Wild closed permanently on Septermber 26, 2004, and the site became the focus of multiple proposed projects that failed to materialize for years. In 2024, local real estate development company, LVXP, unveiled plans for a major casino resort and NBA arena on Wet ‘n Wild’s former property. The still-unnamed project would feature 2,605 hotel rooms and condominium units spread across three towers. The tallest tower, rising 752 feet, would become the highest building in Nevada. Steelman Partners designed the resort, while AECOM is responsible for the arena. Clark County approved the development, with construction originally scheduled to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2029. Today, Wet ‘n Wild is remembered with deep nostalgia. For many longtime Las Vegans, it represents summer childhood memories, family outings, and a rare time when a giant water park stood proudly among the casinos.
