Description

Villa d’Este was a beloved Italian restaurant and lounge that brought a touch of old-world charm and continental sophistication to Las Vegas during its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s. Located just off the famed Strip, Villa d’Este was the creation of Joe Pignatello, a maître d’ and restaurateur who had previously worked at the Sands Hotel. With his impeccable taste and attention to detail, Pignatello sought to create a dining experience that combined the glamour of Las Vegas with the romance and elegance of classic Italian hospitality. Pignatello was friends with Sam Giancana, who ran the Chicago mob. Giancana built the Villa d’Este for Pignatello in 1963, saying, “This will be our place! A multimillion-dollar restaurant.” The restaurant’s name was inspired by the famous Renaissance villa near Rome, and its décor reflected that influence—complete with rich red tones, dark wood accents, and candlelit tables that offered guests a quiet retreat from the neon and noise outside. Villa d’Este quickly earned a reputation not just for its ambiance, but for its superb food and attentive service. The menu featured authentic Italian fare with generous portions, including traditional pasta dishes, veal parmigiana, osso buco, and fresh seafood. Villa d’Este became a popular destination for locals, entertainers, and tourists alike. With its live piano music and vintage lounge vibe, it also attracted Rat Pack-era celebrities and business leaders looking for an intimate setting away from the bustle of the casinos. The restaurant was well known for its classic cocktails and a welcoming atmosphere that made guests feel like family. Today the property is home to the equally iconic Piero’s Italian Cuisine, which was sold to Siegel’s Amazing Brands in June 2025.
