Venue History

The Tillerman opened in 1980 on East Flamingo Road (2245 E. Flamingo Rd.), roughly seven minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, and quickly became one of the city’s well-regarded steak & seafood establishments. From the outset, the Tillerman offered a blend of classic dining ambiance and mid-’80s comfort: wood-panel walls, rich carpeting, booth seating, and tables surrounded by trees and subdued lighting—a deliberate contrast to the flashy resort dining rooms of the Strip. It was regarded as a destination for locals and out-of-town visitors alike seeking fine dining off the main strip. The menu was anchored by premium cuts of beef—rib-eye, porterhouse, filet—and fresh seafood entrées: halibut, lobster tails, stuffed shrimp, and signature dishes such as the Oysters Tillerman and the classic “Tillerman salad bar” served family-style on a Lazy Susan. Over its lifespan, the Tillerman underwent a major refresh: in 2009–2010 new management bought the property and hired Executive Chef Evan Fleisher to modernize the menu while retaining the restaurant’s steak-house identity. For more than 30 years the tillerman was a fixture in the Las Vegas dining scene. It earned a loyal following, often noted in local press as “a long-time favorite” and “an off-Strip landmark for steak and seafood.” However, by the early 2010s the dining-landscape had shifted dramatically: celebrity chefs, resort-destination kitchens, and themed restaurant experiences began to dominate, and the Tillerman faced increased competition. The restaurant quietly closed in 2011 after its lease expired and the space was listed for sale or lease. Though the Tillerman is no longer operating, its legacy remains as a touchstone of a certain era of Las Vegas dining—one that combined steakhouse sophistication with off-Strip intimacy. Its wood-laden interior, signature salad presentation, and steadfast service continue to be fondly recalled by diners and local restaurateurs alike. The Tillerman reminds us that Las Vegas’s dining evolution has always included not just the glitz of the Strip, but quiet, dependable places where generations of visitors and locals alike shared meals, celebrations and memories. Today the property is home to the Latin-oriented La Jolla Nightclub.
