Description

Terrible’s Hotel and Casino was a beloved off-Strip property that embodied the quirky, approachable side of Las Vegas. Located on Paradise Road just east of the Strip, the hotel-casino began life in 1981 as the Continental. For years, the Continental catered to locals and budget-conscious visitors but gained a more colorful identity in 2000, when Herbst Gaming acquired the property and rebranded it under their well-known “Terrible’s” brand. Herbst Gaming, owned by the Herbst family—famous for their chain of Terrible Herbst gas stations—brought their recognizable brand to the world of Las Vegas hospitality. The new name, Terrible’s Hotel and Casino, was intentionally playful, turning the word “terrible” into a badge of honor. The rebrand, combined with renovations and aggressive marketing, gave the old Continental property new life and quickly made Terrible’s a favorite among locals and visitors seeking affordable fun. Terrible’s was never a megaresort, but it thrived by offering value and personality. The hotel featured more than 300 guest rooms, a large casino floor with slots, table games, and video poker, and a welcoming, no-frills atmosphere. Dining was casual, with options like the 24-hour coffee shop and a buffet that gained a loyal following for its hearty meals and low prices. The property’s neon signage, splashed with the cartoonish Terrible Herbst cowboy mascot, became a familiar sight just off Flamingo Road. The casino also leaned into promotions and giveaways, making it an attractive spot for locals. Slot tournaments, food specials, and friendly staff helped cultivate a loyal customer base. Its proximity to the Strip made it convenient for budget-minded tourists, while still offering the quintessential Las Vegas gaming experience. In 2011, Terrible’s underwent another round of renovations, modernizing its rooms and updating its casino floor. Two years later, in 2013, the property was sold and rebranded as Silver Sevens Hotel and Casino, reflecting a shift away from the Terrible’s identity. Though the Terrible’s name is gone from the property, its legacy endures as a beloved example of Las Vegas’s playful side. For more than a decade, Terrible’s Hotel and Casino stood as proof that fun, affordability, and a little humor could create a winning formula in Sin City.
