The Pioneer Club, originally a building from 1918 serving as a restaurant, opened as a club and cocktail lounge in 1942 at the corner of 1st and Fremont Street. The club purchased The Elwell Hotel in 1965, renaming it the Pioneer Club Hotel, but sold it in 1969, leading to its transformation into the Golden Hotel. In 1983, the club expanded by acquiring Club Bingo to increase its casino area. Renamed the New Pioneer Club between 1956 and 1967, it was sold in 1984 to The Golden Nugget, which demolished the hotel to build a parking garage. The club changed ownership several times, including to Margaret Elardi and Gold Strike Resorts. It closed in 1995 due to its inability to compete with larger casinos. The owners closed the venerable Pioneer Club in 1995, and it remained vacant until 1998 when Schiff Enterprises bought it and reopened it as a souvenir store, which it remains to this day. The vintage Pioneer Club signs and the famed Vegas Vic sign still remain on the building’s exterior.
