Paradise Hotel and Casino was a short-lived but curious chapter in Las Vegas history, operating briefly in 1976 on Tropicana Avenue just east of the Strip. Originally part of a Howard Johnson’s motel complex opened in 1973, the property attempted to transition into a more ambitious resort with the launch of the Paradise Hotel and Casino. Intended to capitalize on its prime location near the Tropicana and MGM Grand, the Paradise featured a modest casino floor, a swimming pool, and standard motel-style rooms designed to appeal to budget-minded tourists. Its marketing leaned into the tropical “paradise” theme, aligning with the era’s fondness for exotic escapism. However, despite the name and location, the venture struggled to gain traction amid stiff competition from larger, more established resorts. Operational and financial issues plagued the business from the start. The Paradise Hotel and Casino lasted only about seven months before shutting its doors in late 1976. While its run was brief, the property itself did not vanish. Over the following decades, it underwent multiple reinventions, and today is home to OYO Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. Though the Paradise name faded quickly, it represents a classic Las Vegas story: ambitious dreams, themed branding, and the constant churn of reinvention.
