Venue History

The Oasis Café at 123 Fremont Street holds a special place in Las Vegas history, both for its early presence on the city’s iconic downtown corridor and for the distinction of having installed what is widely regarded as the first neon sign in Las Vegas, back in 1929. Founded in the 1920s under the name “Oasis” and later the “Oasis Café,” the venue sat at the heart of Fremont Street’s early development period. By the early 1930s it had become a recognizable meeting point for locals and visitors alike, offering a relaxed café-restaurant atmosphere on what would soon become the heart of the downtown gaming and entertainment district. Architecturally and culturally, the Oasis Café typified the transitional era of downtown Las Vegas. The 1929 neon sign—a palm tree motif outlined with electric tubing—was a visible marker of the city’s embrace of the neon aesthetic, and it helped catalyze Fremont Street’s identity as “Glitter Gulch.” On postcards and vintage photographs, the café appears nestled just west of the block’s more prominent casino signage, offering a more everyday, accessible experience in contrast to the adjacent gaming palaces. Over time the area around the Oasis Café evolved rapidly. By the mid-1940s and into the 1950s, larger casino-hotel developments began to absorb or replace smaller establishments such as the café. According to historic records, by 1946 the property had been incorporated into the expansion of the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, marking the end of its independent status. Although the physical Oasis Café no longer operates, and its exact storefront has long been enveloped in the larger Downtown Las Vegas redevelopment, its legacy endures. It stands as a reminder of Las Vegas’s roots as a small town dining spot that gradually morphed into one of the world’s most luminous entertainment centers. The café’s pioneering neon, its place on Fremont Street, and its role as an early social hub all contribute to its enduring historical significance.
