Venue History

Mr. Sy’s Casino was a quirky and memorable fixture in the eclectic landscape of vintage Las Vegas. Located just off the Las Vegas Strip across from Stardust Hotel and Casino, Mr. Sy’s wasn’t a towering megaresort but rather a colorful, character-driven venue that embodied the charm of a more personal Vegas experience. The casino took its name from its animated mascot—a wide-eyed, tuxedo-clad cartoon figure in a top hat and bowtie, often depicted holding a hot dog. This playful branding was a major draw and helped the establishment stand out amid the city’s dazzling neon competition. Open from 1962 to 1981, Mr. Sy’s combined 24-hour slot play with a diner-like atmosphere known for casual snacks and friendly service. It was particularly beloved for its “Free Bacon & Eggs” breakfast special, offered daily from 6 to 11 a.m.—a promotion that captured the spirit of value-driven hospitality old-school Las Vegas was famous for. The eatery side of the business, labeled “Mr. Sy’s Snacks,” catered to both early risers and late-night gamblers, providing hearty, affordable fare to tourists and locals alike. Employees from Mr. Sy’s would regularly leave stacks of the venerable Mr. Sy’s Super Funbook Coupon Book around numerous Las Vegas venues and businesses to attract new customers; the book provided coupons for free snacks, meals, drinks, and more, and it worked marvelously, being widely used by new and local customers alike. While not a major player in the high-stakes casino scene, Mr. Sy’s cultivated a loyal following thanks to its approachable vibe, kitschy appeal, and round-the-clock service. It offered a relaxed alternative to the glitz and glamour of the Strip’s larger resorts. Its small bank of slot machines and vintage hospitality earned it a nostalgic reputation among those who fondly recall the “mom-and-pop” era of Las Vegas gaming. Eventually, Mr. Sy’s was overshadowed by the city’s push toward megaresorts and high-end entertainment. Today, Mr. Sy’s stands as a symbol of a bygone era—when Vegas was a little more playful, a little more personal, and always open 24 hours. Today, the property that housed Mr. Sy’s is home to the Las Vegas Plaza Shopping Center.
