Did you know the Vegas Strip area was once host to an amusement park? It’s true. The MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park, launched on December 18, 1993, was the ambitious family-friendly extension of the MGM Grand Las Vegas, sprawling across an original 33 acres built atop the former Tropicana golf course. Designed with a vibrant movie-studio–backlot theme, it featured seven unique rides alongside four theatrical stages infused with live entertainment. Upon opening, guests entered through Casablanca Plaza, then wandered through immersive zones like New York Street, Asian Village, and Olde England, culminating in Old West-themed attractions such as Grand Canyon Rapids and Haunted Mine. Standout thrill-rides included the indoor Lightning Bolt coaster—which expanded outdoors in 1997—and the high-flying SkyScreamer skycoaster. Water rides like Over the Edge log flume and Grand Canyon Rapids added splashy thrills to the lineup. Despite its cinematic theming and entertainment promise—such as the Dueling Pirates stunt show and character-driven mascots like King Looey—the park faced stiff competition from indoor rivals like the Adventuredome and struggled for many reasons, not the least of which was the scorching Nevada heat. Rising operational costs led to an $8 million reconfiguration in 1996 and a significant land reduction in 1997 to make way for a pool, spa, and conference center, shrinking the park to 18.8 acres. By 1998, MGM Grand Adventures shifted to seasonal operation, but ultimately closed its doors to the public on September 4, 2000. It briefly survived as The Park at MGM Grand, hosting corporate events into 2002 before being dismantled to make space for the Signature at MGM Grand condo towers. While MGM Grand Adventures lasted less than a decade, its ambitious blend of rides, live shows, and themed zones marked a bold experiment in “family Vegas.” Critics dubbed it an “uninspired Disneyland copy,” yet for a generation of Gen Xers, its unpredictable charm and eclectic design left a nostalgic imprint. Though it has vanished under new development, the spirit of MGM Grand Adventures endures in Vegas lore—an emblem of an era when Sin City dared to dream beyond the casino floor. Since 2016, the property has served as the home of a Topgolf.
