Description

Tom Wiesner, a Clark County Commissioner, co-founded Southwest Securities Development Company in 1972 and later founded Wiesner Investment Company. In November 1973, Southwest Securities planned the Marina Hotel next to the renovated Golf Club Motel. The Marina, built by Wiesner Investment Company, opened on May 1, 1975, featuring 14 stories, 714 rooms, a casino, two restaurants, and an entertainment lounge. The casino was initially operated by Allen Glick’s Argent Corporation, while Fred Harvey Company managed the hotel, restaurants, and other areas. The adjacent Golf Club Motel later became the Mariner before being demolished in 1986 to become a parking lot for the Marina. In February 1987, the Marina faced financial issues, owing $700,000 to the IRS and $393,000 to Southwest Securities for back rent. The Marina filed for bankruptcy in March 1987, briefly closing its casino in April due to low bankroll. In 1989, Wiesner and partners sold the Marina to Kirk Kerkorian’s MGM Grand, Inc., along with the Tropicana Country Club. Kerkorian planned to construct the MGM Grand Hotel and Theme Park. His $80 million purchase of the Marina was finalized in January 1990. The hotel was remodeled as the MGM Marina, closing on November 30, 1990, to become part of the new MGM Grand, forming its West Wing. The MGM Grand resides on the property to this day.
