Description

The Lucky 13 Club Casino was a small but intriguing gaming venue on early Downtown Las Vegas’s Fremont Street, serving visitors and locals in the mid-1950s. Located at 13 Fremont Street inside the historic Sal Sagev Hotel building, the club operated during a brief but memorable chapter of Fremont Street’s evolution as the city’s neon-lit gaming heart. The Sal Sagev Hotel had already been a landmark downtown property dating back to the first decades of the city’s casino era. In the mid-1950s, the space at 13 Fremont evolved into a suite of small bars and clubs geared toward late-night socializing and gambling, reflecting the dynamic, block-by-block growth of Fremont Street as a tourist and entertainment destination. Among these was the Lucky 13 Club, which opened in 1955 and operated until approximately 1957. Lucky 13 was licensed for slot machines and 21 (blackjack) – a modest but complete gaming profile for an intimate downtown venue. Its name and number placed it literally in the heart of Fremont Street, just across the alley from the Monte Carlo Club and near other local clubs such as the Keyhole Bar and the Trail Café. The club’s signage could be seen in vintage photographs from the era alongside the bright marquees that defined mid-century Fremont Street. Though its lifespan was short, the Lucky 13 Club is emblematic of a unique phase of Las Vegas history when Fremont Street was populated by dozens of independent, theme-free gaming rooms, bars, and social clubs catering to a wide mix of gamblers, servicemen, and tourists. These venues were often tucked into spaces within larger buildings or tucked beside more famous neighbors, and they helped shape downtown’s identity as a vibrant, walkable entertainment district. After the Lucky 13 Club closed around 1957, the space eventually became part of the expansion of the Golden Gate Casino, which absorbed neighboring club spaces over time. Today, the Sal Sagev/Golden Gate block still houses the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino on Fremont Street – a living reminder of the multiple layers of gaming history on the same ground. Despite its brief existence, the Lucky 13 Club remains a fascinating footnote in the story of Downtown Las Vegas gaming – a small, numbered club amidst the growing constellation of Fremont Street’s glittering attractions.
