Description

The Golden Camel Bar, located at 110 North First Street, was one of the small but colorful tavern-style establishments that contributed to Downtown Las Vegas’ dense and competitive nightlife scene during the mid-20th century. Situated just one block north of Fremont Street, the Golden Camel occupied a prime position within the original gambling district – close enough to benefit from heavy pedestrian traffic, yet tucked slightly off the main casino corridor. Operating from 1931 to 1932 and again from 1938 to 1952 the Golden Camel reflected the storefront bar-and-gaming model that characterized early Las Vegas. These venues were typically narrow, intimate rooms anchored by a central bar and supplemented by a handful of slot machines or limited table games, depending on licensing. The atmosphere was informal and social. Regular patrons included railroad workers, casino employees finishing late shifts, and visitors drifting between Fremont Street’s brighter lights. The name “Golden Camel” fit squarely within mid-century Las Vegas branding trends. Exotic, desert-themed, and “golden” imagery was popular among downtown establishments seeking to stand out in a crowded field of saloons, clubs, and gaming rooms. The bar likely featured modest neon signage that added to the growing glow of the Fremont district during its formative decades. North First Street itself was an active commercial strip in the early gaming era, lined with smaller clubs and businesses that complemented the larger Fremont casinos. Patrons could easily walk between venues, creating a lively ecosystem where competition was fierce but foot traffic was steady. Bars like the Golden Camel depended on familiarity, drink specials, and neighborhood loyalty rather than elaborate entertainment. As downtown consolidated in the 1950s and 1960s—and even through the 1970s—many small independent bars and gaming rooms either closed, rebranded, or were absorbed into larger property footprints. The Golden Camel eventually disappeared from city directories and gaming listings, its address transitioning into later commercial uses as redevelopment reshaped the block. Though largely forgotten, the Golden Camel Bar represents the intimate, independent side of early Las Vegas – a time when the city’s reputation was built as much on small neighborhood taverns as on the larger casinos that surrounded them. The former property was absorbed into the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino complex.
