Venue History

Foxy Dog was one of the more colorful, small-scale neighborhood landmarks in Downtown Las Vegas, operating at 326 Fremont Street beginning in the mid-1960s. More than a simple hot-dog stand, it represented a slice of classic Fremont Street life—a place where food, casual gaming, and local foot traffic intersected. Owned by Abe and Evelyn Fox (who also owned Foxy’s Deli and Restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip) and their son Jerry Fox (and Jerry’s wife Marjorie as a corporate officer), Foxy Dog sought a balance between fast, affordable eats and light entertainment. In 1964, the owners applied for a license to house 18 slot machines in the downtown location, investing in the idea that a hot-dog counter could also serve as a micro-gambling joint. Over time, it became known not merely for food but for its blend of dining and modest casino activity, including slots and pinball machines. The Las Vegas Sun covered the Foxy Dog multiple times, reporting that in May 1964 the location was dubbed “the hottest dog in town,” placed next to Trader Bill’s on the corner of 4th and Fremont. The property’s gaming license in Downtown ran continuously from June 16, 1964 through late 1975, and then from October 1, 1975 through June 30, 1989 (a corporate or ownership restructuring likely accounting for the split licensing periods). Life at Foxy Dog was not without drama. A night-shift janitor was once arrested after reportedly taking $250 from the cash register at the counter. In another incident, an armed robbery occurred in early morning hours: a robber held an employee at gunpoint, demanding cash from the till. Though small in footprint compared to Fremont’s bigger casinos, Foxy Dog carved out its own identity as a casual, kitschy, local-friendly spot where you could eat hot dogs, drop a few coins in penny slots, and feel part of the street life. Over the decades, as Downtown evolved and larger casinos swallowed or displaced many mom-and-pop operations, Foxy Dog’s era faded. But its memory lives on among vintage Las Vegas enthusiasts as a reminder of the fearless entrepreneurial spirit that once animated every inch of Fremont Street.
