Opened in 1961, across from the Silver Slipper Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, The Flame was a celebrated steakhouse, remembered for its blend of classic fine dining and mid-century Vegas glamour. Unlike the quick-serve buffets and showy dining rooms that became synonymous with the Strip, The Flame set itself apart as a sophisticated retreat where great food, attentive service, and an intimate atmosphere created one of the most memorable dining experiences in town. Opening during the city’s explosive postwar boom years, The Flame catered to a clientele that wanted more than a meal—they wanted an evening steeped in the mystique of Las Vegas. Red leather booths, dark wood paneling, and warm, dim lighting gave the restaurant its signature vintage vibe. It was the kind of place where couples lingered over martinis, executives sealed deals over thick-cut steaks, and tourists savored their first taste of true Vegas indulgence. The menu was a parade of steakhouse classics, served in hearty, generous portions. Prime rib carved to perfection, tender filets, New York strips, and porterhouses sizzled as the stars of the show. Seafood favorites like lobster tail, shrimp cocktail, and surf-and-turf platters added variety, while traditional sides—baked potatoes, onion rings, and creamed spinach—rounded out the meals. It was comfort and luxury served side by side, a hallmark of The Flame’s identity. The Flame was also known for its impeccable service. Waiters in crisp jackets and seasoned bartenders offered a level of hospitality that matched the Strip’s reputation for over-the-top entertainment. Guests often recalled the experience as timeless—an elegant counterpoint to the neon-soaked excitement waiting just outside. After 32 years of service, The Flame closed in 1993 to make way for the Desert Inn arterial project. It’s spirit, however, endures as a reminder of Las Vegas’ golden era of steakhouses. For many longtime visitors, it remains a symbol of an age when dining on the Strip meant more than just food—it was an event, a ritual, and a brush with the city’s glamorous heart.
