Venue History
Rising along the Boulder Highway corridor on the east side of the valley, the Eastside Cannery Casino and Hotel was built with ambitious intent: to bring a full-service hotel-casino experience to locals in a part of town beyond the Strip-centric glitz. Owned by Boyd Gaming since 2016 (following their acquisition of Cannery Casino Resorts), the property has become a significant chapter in the “Boulder Strip” story. Opening its doors on August 28, 2008, the Eastside Cannery cost approximately $250 million to develop. It took over the land of the former Nevada Palace, demolishing its older structure and making way for a 16-story tower of 307 hotel rooms, a casino space of roughly 64,000 square feet, and multiple restaurants, bars, and meeting facilities. Design-wise, the resort employed an industrial-themed aesthetic: exposed steel trusses, a “saw-tooth” roofline, floor-to-ceiling windows in guest rooms, and design elements meant to echo mid-century modern style while remaining distinctly Vegas. The casino floor opened with more than 2,000 slot machines and approximately 26 table games, alongside a large bingo hall and a race and sports book. Despite its fresh start and robust amenities, the Eastside Cannery faced challenges. In March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Nevada casinos, the Eastside Cannery closed and has not reopened. In early 2025, Boyd Gaming purchased the land under the property (about 29.5 acres) for $45 million, signaling their continued investment, though they stated at the time reopening would be dependent on market conditions and demand. However, on October 24, 2025, Boyd Gaming announced Eastside Cannery Casino and Hotel will be torn down. The company is pursuing the sale of the property for future residential development. “It has been more than five years since Eastside Cannery closed, and current market conditions do not support reopening,” the company said. “As a result, we are moving forward with plans to demolish the structure.”
