In the mid-1960s, Las Vegas was hungry for spectacle. Among its most ambitious restaurant experiments was the Dome of the Sea, a dramatic seafood dining room at the Dunes Hotel that combined fantasy, architecture, and theatrical flair to create one of the city’s most unforgettable mid-century experiences. Constructed in 1964 and formally opened on June 12, 1965, the Dome of the Sea was built as part of the Dunes’ expansion and modernization under architect Milton M. Schwartz. The domed structure protruded from the tower’s south end and appeared as a circular, spaceship-like capsule—an architectural flourish that looked destined for another planet yet somehow felt at home in the desert skyline. Inside, the Dome transported guests beneath the waves—even though no deep sea water was present. Subtle special effects were used: projections of fish and seaweed on curved walls, ambient lighting to evoke watery hues, and reflective materials that shimmered like surf. At the heart of the room floated a moving seashell-shaped harpist stage: a harpist, often costumed as a mermaid, sat in a shell that traced a figure-eight loop over a shallow water moat, serenading diners with sultry tunes. The food matched the fantasy. Promoted as possibly the first dedicated seafood restaurant on the Strip, the kitchen flew in fresh fish and shellfish from Gulf, Great Lakes, and coastal sources. The menu included high-end continental fare such as Lobster Thermidor and other classic seafood plates. As the Dunes evolved, so did the Dome’s identity. In 1972, it briefly shifted into a cocktail-and-entertainment venue called Dome After Hours, open from 1:00 to 5:00 a.m., offering continuous live music and lounge ambiance. When the Dunes eventually closed in 1993 and was demolished for the Bellagio project, the Dome of the Sea vanished too. Yet today, the Dome endures in stories, postcards, and the imagination of those who recall a time when dining in Las Vegas could feel like sitting under the sea.
