Description
During the golden age of Las Vegas nightlife, when resorts sought to offer more than just gaming and shows, the Cloud Nine Lounge at the New Frontier Hotel & Casino stood out as one of the Strip’s most stylish and atmospheric cocktail venues. Introduced as part of the New Frontier’s modernized expansion in 1955, the Cloud Nine was designed to complement the resort’s refreshed identity and provide a cosmopolitan retreat for visitors seeking cocktails, conversation, and live entertainment. The New Frontier itself began life in 1942 as the Hotel Last Frontier and was rebranded “New Frontier” with a major expansion in 1955. That renovation added new restaurants, lounges, and entertainment spaces, including the Venus Room showroom and the Cloud Nine Lounge – both intended to elevate the guest experience beyond the casino floor. Cloud Nine was known for its elegant, celestial-themed décor—three-dimensional murals of stars, planets, and nebulae that wrapped the walls and ceiling—creating an otherworldly setting evocative of its name. It wasn’t just a place to sip drinks; it was a space where Las Vegas’s glamour and mid-century modern style came to life, drawing on the Space Age fascination of the 1950s and ‘60s. During its peak years, the lounge attracted both hotel guests and local patrons who wanted a more refined alternative to the high-energy casino floors. Cocktail waitresses wove through plush seating areas carrying tray stands, while house bands or small ensembles played popular tunes – creating a lively but relaxed soundtrack to social evenings. Its mix of sophistication and showmanship was typical of the era’s lounges, which bridged the worlds of dining, drinking, and entertainment in one elegant environment. As Las Vegas entertainment trends shifted in the 1970s and beyond, lounges like Cloud Nine gradually gave way to larger showroom acts, nightclub experiences, and concert residencies. The New Frontier itself would continue as a resort through various ownership changes until its closure in 2007 and eventual demolition later that year. Though long gone, the Cloud Nine Lounge remains part of the New Frontier’s legacy – a reminder of a time when cocktail culture and glamorous lounges were central to the Las Vegas experience. It represents an era when every great resort included spaces where guests could sip expertly mixed drinks, enjoy live music, and soak in the optimism and style of mid-century Las Vegas
