Description

The CBS Sports World Casino was a short-lived but distinctive entry in late-1990s Las Vegas gaming history, representing an era when smaller operators experimented with themed casino concepts in an effort to compete along an increasingly corporate and entertainment-driven Strip. Located at 3049 Las Vegas Boulevard South, the casino opened in 1997, occupying a parcel that had previously housed earlier independent gaming operations, including Dan’s Royal Flush Casino. The concept behind CBS Sports World centered on combining traditional casino gaming with the growing popularity of sports entertainment. During the 1990s, sports wagering had become an increasingly visible part of Las Vegas culture, and the casino attempted to capitalize on that momentum by presenting itself as a destination for sports fans as much as gamblers. Sports imagery and branding were incorporated throughout the property, aiming to create an environment that differed from the themed mega-resorts dominating the Strip at the time. However, the use of the CBS name quickly became problematic. The television network challenged the casino’s branding, leading to the removal of the CBS name within roughly a year of opening. The property was subsequently renamed simply Sports World Casino, though the rebranding did little to change its fortunes. Without the scale, hotel accommodations, or major entertainment offerings of larger neighboring resorts, the casino struggled to maintain consistent traffic. The late 1990s proved to be a difficult period for smaller Strip casinos. As mega-resorts expanded and sportsbooks inside major properties grew more sophisticated, independent operations faced increasing pressure. Despite attempts to attract a niche audience, Sports World was unable to establish a lasting presence. By 2001, the casino closed, and its gaming equipment and furnishings were auctioned off, marking the end of the site’s final chapter as an operating casino. Today, CBS Sports World Casino is remembered primarily by collectors and Las Vegas historians as an example of the city’s experimental spirit during a transitional period. Its brief existence highlights the challenges faced by smaller themed casinos on the modern Strip and reflects the ongoing evolution of Las Vegas, where new concepts constantly emerge—and just as quickly disappear—in the pursuit of attention and success. Today, the property is home to a Budget Car Rental.
