Venue History

In 2002, Columbia Sussex bought the former Maxim Hotel and Casino for $38 million and spent $90 million renovating it. The new Westin Casuarina Hotel and Casino opened on November 6, 2003, using the Westin’s Casuarina moniker borrowed from its successful Cayman Islands resort. It was the first Westin resort in the U. S. to feature a casino and the first Westin in Nevada. In November 2010, CWCapital Asset Management LLC filed for foreclosure on The Casuarina after Columbia Sussex stopped paying the $160 million mortgage. By October 2011, Columbia Sussex chose not to contest the foreclosure as the hotel was overleveraged due to declining property values in the recession. Lenders asked the court to appoint Pyramid Hotel Group as the resort’s operator. Pyramid leased the casino to 777 Gaming, which operated several local casinos. Later, the hotel was renamed The Westin Las Vegas. It reduced its casino size to focus on hotel amenities like a destination spa. It now operates as a non-gaming resort with a restaurant and updated meeting spaces in the place of the former casino area.
