Venue Description

The Bonanza, a western-themed hotel and casino, was located at 3645 South Las Vegas Boulevard and opened on July 1, 1967. It was built between the Three Coins and the Galaxy Motel, both of which served as the Bonanza’s overflow lodging. Because of financial problems, the Bonanza’s casino portion closed three months later, although the hotel continued to operate. The hotel had 160 rooms; a small number compared to most resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. Businessman, investor, philanthropist, and famed Las Vegas developer, Kirk Kerkorian, purchased the Bonanza at the end of 1968, then sold it several months later to a group of investors. The Bonanza reopened in May 1969, after which a dispute occurred between the top two investors regarding Bonanza’s management. A legal battle ensued, although the two eventually agreed to a settlement. The Bonanza included a showroom and a theater that screened classic films. The casino became popular for its country music acts. Country music legend and Hee-Haw star, Buck Owens, made his Las Vegas Strip debut there in 1969. In 1970, Kerkorian filed a foreclosure action against the then owners and regained control of the Bonanza. The Bonanza closed in early 1973; this famous Strip property is now home to Horseshoe Las Vegas.
