The property began modestly as The Casino, opening on July 1, 1976, adjacent to the Mini-Price Motor Inn on Sahara Avenue, just off the Las Vegas Strip. It was a small, off-Strip gambling hall featuring approximately 5,000 square feet, 100 slot machines, a handful of table games, a snack bar, and about 90 employees. It catered largely to casino workers seeking a casual place to unwind with an inviting, relaxed atmosphere. Just a year later, in 1977, owner Frank Fertitta Jr. expanded the operation and formally tapped into a booming trend—bingo—rebranding the venue as the Bingo Palace Casino. This pivot resonated, targeting local residents with specials like cheap buffets and free giveaways, quickly establishing the casino as a neighborhood favorite. The Bingo Palace Casino laid the groundwork for a whole new model of locals-first gaming resorts in Las Vegas. It refined the blueprint: approachable, service-oriented operations that prioritized value over spectacle, tailored to nearby neighborhoods rather than tourists with mega-budgets. By 1983, having built local loyalty and expanded in size, Fertitta held a contest to rename the property, selecting Palace Station as the winner. The revamped name went into effect in 1984, ushering in a railway-themed identity complete with elaborate neon signage and a major expansion that included a full hotel tower. Though the name “Bingo Palace Casino” lasted just a few years, its legacy endures. It served as the seed that blossomed into today’s beloved Station Casinos empire, reshaping the region by proving neighborhood-oriented resorts could thrive—and become local institutions in their own right.
