Description

The Alpine Village Inn was a beloved Bavarian‑Swiss themed restaurant and inn that left a lasting mark on Las Vegas’s dining scene from its debut in 1950. Founded downtown at 905 North Las Vegas Boulevard by Ray Dambach and Pauline Remmert, it initially offered traditional cuisine—sauerkraut, schnitzel, hearty potato pancakes—to a growing desert city. In 1953, it relocated to Maryland Parkway (near Tropicana), and by 1959 moved again across from the Stardust at Desert Spa Shopping Center. A fire in 1961 triggered another shift, this time to 4375 South Las Vegas Boulevard. Its final and most iconic location opened in 1970 at 3003 Paradise Road, directly opposite the Las Vegas Hilton (now Westgate). Alpine Village Inn was more than just a restaurant, it was an experience. The upper dining room featured fairy‑tale chalet décor, a miniature train winding through Alpine murals, Swiss cuckoo clocks, and staff in lederhosen and dirndls. Downstairs, the lively Rathskeller offered communal tables, peanuts tossed on the floor, popcorn, and oompah‑style sing‑along evenings—it was “where it was at,” full of spirited German‑style revelry. Regular dishes included a famed seasoned cottage‑cheese dip and homemade creamed chicken soup served in pewter bowls—recipes still fondly remembered in local newspapers. Patrons, from politicians to tourists, cherished a family‑style atmosphere that felt unlike any other place in Vegas. By the mid‑’90s, majority owner Lou Wiener’s passing and the mounting cost of upkeep on the nearly 27‑year‑old Paradise Road building led his estate to opt for closure rather than renovation. The restaurant shut its doors in March 1997; decor and memorabilia were sold at auction, and the building was demolished to make way for parking. Today the property is home to Fairfield Inn Las Vegas Convention Center.
