Gold Spike Hotel and Casino was a longtime downtown Las Vegas property known for affordable lodging, approachable gaming, and an unpretentious atmosphere just north of Fremont Street. Located at 217 Las Vegas Boulevard North, the building opened in 1976 as the 112-room Rendezvous, beginning a history shaped by repeated ownership changes, renovations, and reinvention. After the Rendezvous closed, veteran casino operator Jackie Gaughan acquired the property in 1983. It reopened as the Gold Spike in 1985 and became part of Gaughan’s collection of old-school downtown casinos. For years, the Gold Spike catered to value-conscious visitors with inexpensive rooms, slot machines, table games, a restaurant, and a relaxed casino floor that felt far removed from the polished megaresorts of the Strip. Gaughan sold the Gold Spike and several other downtown properties in the early 2000s. Subsequent owners reduced gaming and explored repositioning the aging hotel. The Siegel Group purchased it in 2008 and launched an extensive renovation, modernizing the casino, guest rooms, lobby, restaurant, and exterior. The neighboring motel was incorporated into the operation, and the Oasis pool opened in 2010, giving the property a more contemporary boutique-hotel identity. A dramatic change arrived in 2013, when Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project acquired the Gold Spike as part of its effort to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. The casino closed permanently on April 14, ending nearly three decades of gaming under the Gold Spike name. Slot machines and gaming tables were removed, and the former casino floor was transformed into a smoke-free bar, lounge, coworking space, and social playground. The reimagined Gold Spike became known for oversized games, live music, special events, and its indoor “Living Room” and outdoor “Backyard.” Lodging continued through Oasis at Gold Spike, a neighboring boutique hotel offering rooms, poolside suites, and a large rooftop penthouse. Its evolution mirrors downtown’s transition from traditional gambling district to a mixed nightlife and hospitality neighborhood. In 2026, the property entered another chapter under new ownership. No longer a casino, Gold Spike now markets itself as a ‘one of a kind nightlife and bar venue.’ While the original Gold Spike Hotel and Casino is long gone, the current Gold Spike iteration remains a recognizable downtown destination, illustrating Las Vegas’ ability to repeatedly reinvent older properties while preserving pieces of their historic identity.
