The Moby Grape was a legendary and influential hard rock club in Las Vegas that anchored the local music scene from 1972 to 1990. It is fondly remembered as a loud, sweaty, unpretentious counterpoint to the polished showrooms and casino lounges that dominated the city’s entertainment image. Located near Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway, across from the UNLV area, the venue developed a cult following among college students and local rockers. Over its 18-year run, it was known for raucous parties, legendary Halloween events, wet t-shirt contests, and late-night drop-ins by countless famous touring rock stars. The club opened in July 1972 and operated until July 1990, giving it an unusually long run for a Las Vegas nightlife venue. Its ownership included Ralph Bullinger, Lloyd “Grape” Charles, John Harrity, and Steve Tichenor. Despite sharing a name with the San Francisco psychedelic rock band Moby Grape, the Las Vegas club was not named after the group. According to later accounts from Tichenor, the word “Grape” came from partner Lloyd Charles’s nickname, and the overlap with the band was essentially a coincidence. Inside, Moby Grape became known for hard rock, heavy drinking, packed crowds, and the kind of live-music energy that helped build a true scene. It was not a glamorous room; it was a working rock club. Bands played close to the audience, regulars gathered night after night, and the atmosphere leaned more toward guitars, denim, leather, and long hair than tuxedos or cocktail glamour. For many Las Vegas locals, it became the place to hear live rock before the city developed a larger, more formalized club circuit. Moby Grape’s importance lies in its role as a community hub. While Las Vegas was famous for headliners, lounge acts, and casino entertainment, the Grape represented the city’s grassroots rock culture. Its memory endured strongly enough that former patrons and musicians later organized reunions and fundraising events tied to the club’s legacy. Today, Moby Grape is remembered as a beloved piece of local Las Vegas nightlife history: a no-frills rock room where the city’s louder, wilder side found a home. The former site of Moby Grape is now occupied by a location of the Dotty’s Casino and Tavern chain.
