Description

The Players Casino and Nightclub was one of the earliest entertainment venues to operate on what would become the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. Opened from 1945 through 1949 on Highway 91—the roadway later renamed Las Vegas Boulevard—the property occupied land that today forms the main gate area of Wynn Las Vegas. Though modest in size compared to the grand resorts that would later dominate the Strip, The Players represented an important chapter in the formative years of Las Vegas tourism and gaming. When The Players opened, the Strip was still in its infancy. Las Vegas Boulevard south of downtown was lined with a scattered collection of small casinos, nightclubs, motor courts, and roadside businesses rather than the massive integrated resorts for which the city would later become famous. In this environment, The Players served as a gathering place for locals, travelers, and gamblers seeking entertainment in a more intimate setting. The venue combined casino gaming with live nightlife, a formula that would eventually become a defining characteristic of Las Vegas resorts. Guests enjoyed slot machines, table games, cocktails, and live entertainment under one roof. While the property lacked the scale and luxury of later destinations such as the Desert Inn, Sands, or Stardust, it reflected the entrepreneurial spirit that characterized early Las Vegas. Operators of the period often relied on personality, atmosphere, and service rather than elaborate architecture or large budgets. Like many early Strip venues, The Players helped establish the corridor as a destination distinct from downtown Fremont Street. Its presence contributed to the gradual migration of tourism and gaming activity southward, laying the groundwork for the explosive Las Vegas Strip development that followed. Every small casino and nightclub that opened along Highway 91 helped demonstrate the area’s potential, and The Players was among those pioneers. The property eventually disappeared as larger and more ambitious developments transformed the Strip. Yet its significance lies in its timing and location. Long before luxury resorts rose on the site, The Players welcomed guests to a frontier-era Las Vegas that was still finding its identity. Today, The Players Casino and Nightclub is remembered as one of the Strip’s earliest establishments, a small but meaningful contributor to the growth of Las Vegas into the entertainment capital of the world.
