Venue History

The Casbar Lounge at the Sahara Hotel and Casino was one of the most sophisticated and influential nightlife venues of 1950s Las Vegas, capturing the glamour, intimacy, and star-driven energy that defined the Strip’s golden era. Opening with the Sahara in 1952, the Casbar quickly established itself as a premier lounge, offering a more personal and immersive alternative to the larger showroom venues of the time. Designed as an upscale, circular cocktail lounge, the Casbar emphasized closeness between performer and audience. Its layout featured tightly arranged tables surrounding a central stage, allowing guests to feel fully engaged with the entertainment. This intimacy became one of the lounge’s defining characteristics, setting it apart from the grand theater-style showrooms elsewhere on the Strip. Adding to its appeal was a unique secondary space known as the ‘Date Room’, a semi-private, more secluded section within the Casbar. The Date Room offered a quieter, more romantic environment for couples who wanted to enjoy the atmosphere of the lounge without being directly in the center of the performance area. With softer lighting, tucked-away seating, and attentive cocktail service, it provided a sense of exclusivity while still connecting guests to the energy of the room. This thoughtful design reflected the Sahara’s forward-looking approach to nightlife, catering to multiple moods within a single venue. Throughout the 1950s, the Casbar hosted an impressive roster of performers, including Louis Prima and Keely Smith, whose high-energy acts became synonymous with the lounge. Early appearances by Don Rickles also helped cement the Casbar’s reputation as both a proving ground and a showcase for major talent. The lounge played a vital role in establishing the Sahara as a top-tier destination. While the resort’s larger venues drew headline acts, the Casbar offered something equally compelling; an intimate, stylish setting where guests could enjoy world-class entertainment up close. Although the Casbar gradually faded as Las Vegas evolved in the 1960s, its influence endured. It remains a defining example of mid-century lounge design where atmosphere, performance, and carefully crafted spaces like the Date Room combined to create a uniquely memorable Las Vegas experience.
