Description

The Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book, operated by Las Vegas bookmaker Harry Gordon, was a distinctive and somewhat short-lived wagering venue located on the Las Vegas Strip, positioned directly across from the Dunes Hotel and Casino. Opening in 1973, the property represented a rare attempt to establish a standalone race and sports book in the heart of the Strip during a period of rapid evolution in Las Vegas gaming. Named after the legendary Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky—the home of the Kentucky Derby—the venue capitalized on one of the most recognizable brands in American horse racing. This association gave it immediate credibility among bettors and helped attract a clientele of serious horseplayers looking for a dedicated wagering environment. Unlike traditional casino sportsbooks, Churchill Downs offered a focused, no-frills setting built specifically for betting. Inside, patrons found betting windows, large odds boards, racing forms, and seating areas designed for studying races and tracking results. Televised feeds from racetracks across the country created a steady flow of action, while regular customers gathered to analyze odds, exchange tips, and follow their wagers throughout the day. Its Strip location provided high visibility and easy access, but it also placed the operation in direct competition with larger, better-capitalized casino properties. During the mid-to-late 1970s, major resorts began expanding and modernizing their in-house race and sports books, offering more comfortable surroundings and integrated amenities that appealed to a broader audience. As these changes reshaped the market, standalone venues like Churchill Downs faced increasing pressure. By the late 1970s—around 1977 to 1978—the race and sports book closed, marking the end of its brief but notable run. Though short-lived, Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book remains a unique chapter in Las Vegas history. Operating during a transitional era, it reflected an ambitious attempt to bring a dedicated, Strip-front wagering experience to life—bridging the gap between early turf clubs and the expansive sportsbook operations that would later become standard within Las Vegas resort casinos. Today, the Churchill Downs Race & Sports Book former property is home to Paris Hotel & Casino.
