Description

The Cromwell Hotel and Casino was a boutique luxury resort on the Las Vegas Strip that blended modern design with a layered history dating back to the city’s mid-century gaming era. Located at the prominent southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, the property evolved through several identities before becoming The Cromwell in 2014 . The site originally opened in 1979 as the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino, a compact, Western-themed property developed by Michael Gaughan. Known for its approachable atmosphere and strong gaming operation, the Barbary Coast quickly gained a loyal following among both tourists and locals. Its prime corner location ensured steady foot traffic, and the casino became particularly popular for its table games and sportsbook. In 2007, the property became Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon under the Harrah’s Entertainment umbrella (later Caesars Entertainment). While retaining much of the Barbary Coast’s structure, the venue leaned into a more casual, honky-tonk style, maintaining its identity as a smaller, personality-driven casino amid the increasingly corporate Strip. A major transformation came in the early 2010s, when Caesars Entertainment undertook a complete renovation of the property. The goal was to create a more upscale, boutique-style experience that contrasted with the large-scale resorts surrounding it. In May 2014, the property reopened as The Cromwell, becoming the first standalone boutique hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. The Cromwell introduced a European-inspired design aesthetic, featuring 188 guest rooms and suites, a reimagined casino floor, and a focus on personalized service. One of its most notable features was Drai’s Beachclub & Nightclub, a rooftop venue that combined a daytime pool party atmosphere with high-energy nightlife, offering panoramic views of the Strip. Unlike mega-resorts, The Cromwell emphasized intimacy and exclusivity. Its smaller scale allowed for a more curated guest experience, while its central location kept it firmly connected to the energy of Las Vegas Boulevard. During its life, The Cromwell stood as a modern reinterpretation of a classic Strip corner—one that honors its past while embracing contemporary luxury, proving that even in a city known for constant reinvention, history and innovation can—and did—coexist on the same iconic footprint. The Cromwell closed in March 2026 to make way for the new Vanderpump Hotel and Casino, designed and named after famed businesswoman Lisa Vanderpump, which is set to open April 2026.
