Description

The Santa Anita Turf & Bar, located at 113 Fremont Street, was a small but lively wagering lounge that operated in Downtown Las Vegas from 1948 to 1952, reflecting the era when horse-race betting played a central role in the city’s gambling culture. Situated along the busy Fremont Street corridor, the establishment catered to race enthusiasts who gathered daily to follow results from major racetracks across the United States. The venue took its name from Santa Anita Park, the famous thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, which was widely regarded as one of the premier racing venues in North America. By adopting the Santa Anita name, the bar signaled its identity as a destination for serious horse-race bettors as well as casual fans looking to experience the excitement of legal wagering in Las Vegas. During the 1940s and 1950s, Las Vegas was one of the few places in the country where bettors could legally place wagers on out-of-state horse races. Fremont Street casinos and taverns often included turf clubs or race bars where patrons studied racing forms, compared odds, and waited for race results delivered through telegraph or wire services. The Santa Anita Turf & Bar fit squarely into this tradition, offering a setting where gamblers could track races from Santa Anita and other tracks around the country. Inside, the atmosphere was typical of early Las Vegas turf rooms. Patrons gathered around a bar and small wagering counter while racing information was posted on chalkboards or bulletin boards. Regulars discussed handicapping strategies while sipping cocktails and watching for the latest results. Slot machines and other small gaming options were often present, creating a hybrid environment that blended sports wagering with traditional casino entertainment. Because of its prime Fremont Street location, the Santa Anita Turf & Bar benefited from steady foot traffic generated by nearby casinos. Visitors moving between gambling halls often stopped in to check racing results or place a quick wager before continuing down the neon-lit street. While Santa Anita Turf & Bar faded from the Fremont Street scene, it remains a reminder of the early days of Las Vegas wagering, when horse-race betting and neighborhood turf rooms were an essential part of downtown gaming culture. In 1969, 113 Fremont Street was absorbed into the expansion of the Golden Nugget Las Vegas Hotel & Casino.
