Description

The Las Vegas Club Hotel & Casino, located at the corner of Fremont Street and Main Street, entered a new chapter in its long downtown history when it became part of the Barrick Gaming Corporation portfolio in March 2004. The acquisition marked the end of legendary downtown casino owner Jackie Gaughan’s era and represented an ambitious attempt to reinvigorate Fremont Street’s older casino properties during a period of rapid change in Las Vegas gaming. Barrick Gaming, founded by D.W. Barrick and Stephen Crystal, purchased the Las Vegas Club along with several other downtown casinos—including the Plaza, Gold Spike, and Western—in an $82 million deal. The company partnered with the Tamares Group, which held interests in the underlying real estate, while Barrick operated the casino businesses. The goal was to stabilize and modernize aging properties that had struggled to compete with newer Strip resorts and changing tourist expectations. At the time, the Las Vegas Club was already known for its sports-themed identity, cultivated during earlier ownership decades. Murals of athletes, stadium-inspired décor, and a loyal base of local sports bettors defined the casino’s personality. However, by the early 2000s, the property faced increasing competition from larger resorts offering expanded amenities, modern sportsbooks, and updated hotel accommodations. Barrick’s stewardship focused largely on maintaining operations while evaluating long-term redevelopment potential in downtown’s evolving market. The Barrick era proved relatively brief. In 2005, the Tamares Group bought out Barrick’s ownership interest in the downtown properties, including the Las Vegas Club, shifting operational control to new management entities. The transition reflected broader industry trends in which casino operations and real estate ownership increasingly separated as downtown properties searched for new investment and direction. Though short-lived, the Barrick Gaming period represents an important transitional moment in the Las Vegas Club’s history – bridging the gap between the independently owned downtown casinos of the late 20th century and the redevelopment-driven downtown renaissance that would follow in the 2010s. Today, the site is part of the redevelopment that became Circa Resort & Casino, but the Las Vegas Club’s Barrick-era chapter remains a reminder of a time when Fremont Street’s classic casinos fought to adapt while preserving their old-school character.
