Venue History

The Horseshoe Hotel and Casino, originally known as Binion’s Horseshoe, stands as one of the most iconic gambling landmarks in downtown Las Vegas. Founded by legendary gaming pioneer Benny Binion, it opened in 1951 at 128 Fremont Street, forever changing the tone and culture of Fremont’s casino scene. Binion envisioned a gambler’s paradise that emphasized fair odds, no-limit bets, and a welcoming atmosphere—an approach that revolutionized downtown gaming. The Horseshoe quickly became known for its high-stakes tables, friendly dealers, and personalized service, a stark contrast to the more formal Strip resorts. Binion’s philosophy was simple: treat small bettors like big ones, and big bettors like kings. The Horseshoe also gained fame for its distinctive décor. A glittering display of one million dollars in cash encased in glass became one of Las Vegas’ most photographed attractions, symbolizing the thrill of possibility that defined the city’s allure. In 1970, the Horseshoe made gaming history by hosting the inaugural World Series of Poker (WSOP)—a small invitational at the time that would grow into the world’s most prestigious poker event. The WSOP transformed not only the Horseshoe’s reputation but also the global image of professional poker. Over the decades, the property remained under the Binion family’s control until 2004, when financial troubles and regulatory issues led to its sale. Harrah’s Entertainment (now Caesars Entertainment) acquired the Horseshoe brand and the WSOP rights. The downtown casino continued under the name Binion’s Gambling Hall, while the Horseshoe brand later resurfaced elsewhere under Caesars’ portfolio. In a full-circle moment for the franchise, Caesars rebranded Bally’s Las Vegas on the Strip as Horseshoe Las Vegas in 2022, reviving the legendary name for a new generation. Today, the Horseshoe legacy stands as a cornerstone of Las Vegas gaming culture—celebrated for its roots in honest play, approachable luxury, and the larger-than-life vision of Benny Binion. It remains an enduring symbol of old-school Vegas grit meeting the timeless excitement of taking a chance.
