The Coin Castle Casino was a small but spirited fixture on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, operating under that name from 1970 until 1999. The casino opened on September 4, 1970, under owner Don Petit, licensed for both slot machines and blackjack. In its early years, it offered a mix of table games and slots, with lively street-level promotions. Hawkers stood outside, calling out to passersby, handing out promotional items like key rings and coupons, and cheering on prospects to “come in and play.” In 1977, Petit sold his share, and Herbert “Herb” Pastor assumed control of the property. After that point, Coin Castle transitioned into a slots-only casino, dropping table games like blackjack. Over time, Coin Castle cultivated a distinct atmosphere. Its facade and interior leaned into a playful “castle” theme, complete with neon signage that evoked royal imagery. Patrons remember the use of tin payout trays under slot machines—amplifying the clink and noise of coins—as well as energetic floor staff and announcers using microphones to hype play. The casino also handed out small giveaways—strings of Mardi Gras beads, coupons, and occasional perks—as part of its promotional drive. In 1999, Pastor undertook a renovation and rebranding, converting Coin Castle into La Bayou. The transformation reflected evolving tastes and competition on Fremont Street. With that change, the old castle motif was retired, including its signature “king” statue and iconic letters—many of which were subsequently donated to the Neon Museum. Today, the property is home to Circa Resort and Casino. Though Coin Castle no longer exists in name, its memory lingers in Las Vegas lore. It stands as a reminder of an era when small, themed casinos staked out their niche in a downtown setting, relying on personality, promotion, and the clang of coins to bring in players.
