Fitzgeralds Las Vegas opened in 1987 on the site of the old Sundance Hotel and Casino on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. In December 2001, after Fitzgeralds Gaming went bankrupt, Don Barden’s Majestic Star Casino, LLC bought it along with two other Fitzgeralds casinos in Mississippi and Colorado. Barden was the first African American casino owner in Las Vegas. He separated Fitzgeralds Las Vegas from the Majestic Star group two years after its purchase to remove lender restrictions and started a multimillion-dollar renovation that improved customer patronage. In May 2008, Barden intended to use Fitzgeralds to support a $35 million stake in a slots-only casino in Pittsburgh but later decided not to pursue the plan. After Barden’s death in October 2011, his estate sold Fitzgeralds Las Vegas to Golden Gate Casino owners, brothers Derek and Greg Stevens, who renamed it the D Las Vegas in Fall 2012.
