The property at 99 Convention Center Drive, just east of the Las Vegas Strip and adjacent to the Las Vegas Convention Center, opened in 1970 under the name Royal Las Vegas, initially part of the Royal Executive Inns chain. The hotel’s original concept focused on serving convention and business travelers, rather than competing directly with the glitz of the Strip. Around 1973, a casino was added to the hotel, and the property was branded as the Royal Casino. For several decades that followed, the property balanced modest gaming operations with lodging aimed at convention traffic. In the early 1990s, the name was changed to Royal Hotel and Casino. During its casino years, the Royal offered a relatively small footprint—at times cited as about 100 slot machines and a couple of blackjack tables. Over the years it shifted operations: around 2003, the casino portion had closed and the hotel function remained the core business. As the property evolved, it took on the name Royal Resort, operating as a non-gaming hotel near the convention center. In 2022, a fire on the seventh floor triggered the building’s sprinkler system, causing major water damage throughout the property. That event forced closure of the hotel, which never fully resumed operations. Subsequently, in mid-2025, the Royal Resort underwent a liquidation sale in preparation for demolition, which is scheduled for anytime as of this writing (October 2025). Over its lifetime and through various name changes, the Royal at 99 Convention Center Drive carved out a niche as a convention-oriented, value lodging with modest gaming ambitions. It served as an economical option for trade show attendees, business travelers, and guests seeking proximity to the convention center without the premium of Strip resorts. Its legacy is one of quiet endurance, modest reinventions, and gradual decline: a property born to support Las Vegas’s business and convention traffic, weathering decades of change before succumbing to fire and redevelopment.
