Description

The Regent Hotel and Casino was one of the most ambitious projects to rise in the northwest valley of Las Vegas during the late 1990s. Opening its doors in 1999, the Regent was designed to be a luxurious, European-inspired destination that would cater to both locals and tourists looking for an upscale experience away from the hustle of the Strip. Developed by Swiss Casinos, the Regent was envisioned as a high-end resort property on par with some of the finest hotels in Las Vegas. Built in the master-planned community of Summerlin, at Rampart Boulevard and Alta Drive, it featured lavish design touches meant to evoke Old World grandeur—ornate chandeliers, marble accents, and spacious rooms with elegant décor. The property was also home to fine dining restaurants, convention space, a spa, and a large pool area that made it stand out in the suburban resort market. The casino floor was well-appointed, offering slots, table games, and a race and sports book. While smaller than the megaresorts on the Strip, it aimed for quality over quantity, attracting a clientele that appreciated refinement and a quieter atmosphere. It was also strategically positioned to serve Summerlin residents who wanted a luxury casino experience without traveling to the Strip. Despite its ambitions, the Regent struggled financially almost from the start. Competition from larger resorts and the challenge of building a strong tourist draw in a suburban location left the property unable to meet its revenue goals. By 2001, just two years after opening, the Regent filed for bankruptcy. In 2002, Hotspur Resorts purchased the property and launched the Rampart Casino while continuing to operate the hotel as part of the JW Marriott chain. This new arrangement stabilized the resort and gave it a lasting identity as a luxury suburban retreat. Today, the former Regent lives on as the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort and Rampart Casino. While its original name was short-lived, the Regent remains a fascinating chapter in Las Vegas history—a bold attempt to blend European-style luxury with suburban gaming and hospitality.
