Description

The property’s journey began in 1962 when toy magnate Edwin S. Lowe opened the Tallyho Hotel, a 450-room English Tudor-style resort at 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. Notably, it stood out as one of the few hotels in Nevada without a casino—a bold experiment that ultimately proved unsustainable. Within a year, it shuttered due to financial strains. In 1963, Kings Crown Inns of America acquired the property and reopened it as the King’s Crown Tallyho. Though plans for a casino were introduced, the Nevada Gaming Control Board denied the license due to concerns over financing, stalling its transformation into a gaming resort. The turning point came in 1966, when Milton Prell purchased the hotel for around $10 million. Remarkably, he infused it with an enchanting Arabian Nights theme, rechristening it The Aladdin on April 1, 1966. The reimagined property featured elaborate decor, a bustling casino, a showroom, and even a golf course. The resort continued evolving. In 1976, a 19‑story Tower of Majesty was added, along with the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, establishing the Aladdin as a significant entertainment destination. The famed wedding of Elvis and Priscilla Presley took place in the hotel’s private suite in 1967, adding a glamorous footnote to its storied past. Despite its grandeur, the Aladdin faced financial challenges. Ownership changed hands multiple times—Parvin Dohrmann in the early 70s, followed by real estate investors and even Wayne Newton, who briefly held a stake. Eventually acquired by Japanese developer Ginji Yasuda in the mid-1980s, the resort entered bankruptcy by the late ’80s. The resort closed on November 25, 1997, and was demolished in 1998, making room for a new, larger complex. The modern version opened in 2000 under the Aladdin name, but entered bankruptcy in 2001. In 2003, Aladdin was sold to Starwood and Planet Hollywood, and since 2007 has operated as Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, now managed by Caesars Entertainment.
