Hotel Apache, located in downtown Las Vegas, holds a unique place in the city’s early hospitality history. Opened on March 19, 1932, by the Silvagni family, the Hotel Apache was an ambitious project that aimed to bring modern luxury to the heart of Fremont Street. Boasting 81 rooms, it was among the most sophisticated hotels of its era, notable for introducing several firsts to Las Vegas, including the city’s first fully carpeted casino and the first elevator in a hotel. The hotel quickly became a social hub, attracting both travelers and local elites. Its adjacent casino helped lay the groundwork for the burgeoning downtown gaming scene, years before the Las Vegas Strip rose to prominence. After a 19-year run, Hotel Apache closed in May 1951 and was bought by Benny Binion. Hotel Apache was eventually absorbed into the larger Binion’s Horseshoe complex in the 1950s. Under Binion’s ownership, the focus shifted to the Horseshoe Casino, and the Hotel Apache was largely shuttered and forgotten about for decades. In 2019, the old Hotel Apache underwent a careful restoration and reopened on July 29, 2019, with a boutique and vintage flair, embracing its 1930s roots. The new iteration preserved much of the historic character, including original architectural details and period-inspired decor. Marketed as a “haunted hotel,” the revived Hotel Apache capitalized on its ghostly legends and old-Vegas mystique to attract modern-day visitors seeking a taste of authentic Las Vegas history. Today, the new Hotel Apache operates as part of Binion’s Gambling Hall, offering a nostalgic experience that pays tribute to the city’s early days. With its vintage charm, historical significance, and connection to the origins of Las Vegas gaming culture, Hotel Apache remains a testament to downtown’s enduring spirit and the city’s evolution from dusty railroad stop to global entertainment capital.
